After scanning the media, I have no doubt that the famous supermodels are back, they are everywhere: magazine covers, commercial campaigns, articles, exhibitions...
My question would be if they still represent the same values with their physical apperance as they did during the first part of their careers.
In order to solve this question, I have selected images of three supermodels: Eva Herzigova, Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer to analyse if they look similar now to how they did in the 90's.
Are all of them still representing the image of a sexy, healthy and real woman with curves and a positive attitude?
Judge by yourselves and comment the differences...if there are
hey ya!
ReplyDeleteit's interesting to see that the chest sizes of the 90s were much bigger than the 'nowadays' section...
Are the nowadays' interpetation representing the image of a sexy, healthy and real women now?
It's hard to say when most women portrayed in the media ARE generally looking towards that...
How are you planning to change women's perception?
That would be interesting to explore
Maybe you could start with fashion designers to see if THEY could change their muses to someone who ARE what YOU THINK portray the REAL women then they would start picking those women to wear their clothes and advertise it with them...
Good luck gurl!
They definitely aren't as sexy as they used to be, specially in the case of Eva Herzigova, which even looks quiet unhealthy to me.
ReplyDeleteI supose you have to take in account that thin women with age tend to get skinnier, which could be the case of Claudia and Christy, or haved they forced themselves to look more like the actual models to stay in the limelight? Quite sad, if that is the case...
I supose most of women prefer the photos of the 90's, and no doubt men do also...so why does the fashion industry insist in the "skeleton look"? Ok, some clothes look nicer on tall and thin people. But so thin?
Can the consumer's opinion change this?
There is a definite difference in how the women of the 90s and present day are portrayed. But the real question is-are the present day ones sexy? or borderline anorexic? but then what is sexy is subject to interpretation, no? Do you think the perception of women have changed due to the environment? issues at hand? the health trend? the non-smoking trend? the less is more trend? or is it because we are in a culture of loosing weight and looking good? Is society expectations the driving force behind the 'sexy' look of 2009?
ReplyDeleteBut you raise an interesting concept of idealism in beauty. What is ideal? How do you define ideal? Is it subject to interpretation? Or subject to change?
Some food for thought...
I think everytime someone starts talking about this topic, they take the position of being against anorexia because it´s "the right way to think". But nowadays there are also many thin girls who see themselves represented in magazine covers... What I´m trying to say is that it´s impossible to please everybody at the same time, specially when we´re talking about fashion.
ReplyDeleteI think top models above were sexier during the 90´s, but I´m aware it depends on the eye who´s looking. Anyway we must take it easy, fashion goes back to past and returns to future continuously, so I´m pretty sure we´ll see 90´s curves in girls soon ;)
I don't think that people are against anorexia bacause "it's the right way to think",it's a mental and physical disorder, it's not a topic of which you are in favour or in disagreement. No one would want themselves or any loved one to suffer it.
ReplyDeleteNow, do you think the people that suffer this eating disorder have been influenced by the magazine covers, the adds on tv, their favourite top model or Hollywood star?
Many of us know people with this problem, and we can't trivialize or try to simplify what goes through their minds...but I am sure that the images they receive constantly don't help at all...
And knowing that the objective of this project is not a "debate about anorexia"...(sorry about that ;-) )...If we don't want to wait until the "ideal female image" changes with fashion, how can we as consumers make a difference?
Thanks for the comments girls!
ReplyDeleteYou gave me some material to think. I think that the 90's tops are definitively back but with a different aesthetic.
Some of them like Christy hasn't changed too much but, in my opinion, Eva looks completely different, much more like the current models...she has lost most of the curves that made her famous.
The sad part is that people say that the trend of the 90's can be back but in my opinion, it is not yet. Most of the 90's models have lost their voluptuous bodies or are portrayed in the same fragile, skinny look as the current ones so, for me, this is not a new trend but a change of model...
